Welcome to Vilnius University

Hinc itur ad astra (From here, the way leads to the stars)

Founded in 1579Vilnius University stands as one of Europe's oldest and most prestigious academic institutions, widely recognized as Lithuania's premier academic institution. Situated in the heart of Vilnius Old Town, it serves as both a vibrant center of learning and a stunning architectural treasure.

Over nearly 500 years, its architectural ensemble has evolved to showcase a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical styles, beautifully illustrating Lithuania's rich cultural history. The complex is comprised of 13 historic courtyards, each with its own distinctive charm.

At the heart of the complex, you'll find the Church of St. Johns, distinguished by its 68-meter bell tower which provides panoramic views of the city. The church, originally built in the 14th century, features an exquisite Baroque interior by Johann Christoph Glaubitz. It is home to Lithuania’s largest altar and a magnificent pipe organ, and it hosts the university's graduation ceremonies.

Since the Renaissance, Vilnius University has been a key crossroads of ideas, influencing European thought and academic discourse. The university's enduring dedication to knowledge and discovery is captured in its motto, "Hinc itur ad astra" (from here, the way leads to the stars), which is inscribed on the Observatory wall.

Today, Vilnius University remains a leading center for research and education, a place where scholars and students continue to shape Lithuania's intellectual, scientific, and cultural landscapes. This multifaceted legacy is deeply rooted in a vibrant history of university, and one of its most fascinating dimensions is the story of its theatre.

The Vilnius University Theatre has a long and fascinating history, with its origins dating back to 1570, marking the birth of Lithuanian theatre. The Jesuits who founded the university saw theatrical performances as a key part of the curriculum, using elaborate productions with special effects to teach students eloquence and confidence. Early performances were held in courtyards, city squares, and even the Church of St. Johns. In the 18th century, a dedicated theatre hall was built above the Grand Courtyard, precisely where the university theatre is located today. More about VU theatre and its history: here.

By attending the XIII World Congress of the International University Theatre Association (AITU-IUTA), you will not only engage with modern theatrical practice and research but also stand in a space where centuries of history come alive. This is where tradition and innovation converge, offering a unique setting for dialogue and discovery.
